Drummond's Red Maple

from $125.00

I first saw bonsai trees in an ancient garden in Suzhou, China and was taken by the majesty that belied their size, as well as the devotion that went into their cultivation and training. Artistry, patience and love are explicit in the variety of form and styles within the bonsai world.

One of my favorite places to visit and photograph is the bonsai collection at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum within the US National Arboretum in Washington, DC. It is a quiet and meditative space. And for me the act of making portraits of these beings is also a meditative and devotional act. I employ shallow depth of field to illustrate their depth, character and mystery. It also acts as an invitation to the viewer to enter into their own meditative space.

This image is of a Drummond Red Maple (var. drummondii) and has been in training since 1974.
